A comparison of three methods to estimate variations in the relative abundance of moutain vizcachas (Lagidium viscacia) in the High Andes ecosystems Mastozool. neotrop.
Lucherini,Mauro; Reppucci,Juan I.; Luengos Vidal,Estela.
Mountain vizcachas are large rodents that constitute the main prey of the High Andes meso-carnivores. We compared the line transect pellet count, observation rate and photographic rate methods to estimate the relative abundance of Mountain vizcachas in the High Andes ecosystems. Although a more formal validation based on the comparison with true abundances is desirable, our results suggested that these simple and affordable indices are promising methods, especially if protocols and sampling efforts are carefully standardized. We recommend the use of photographic rates, which are likely to provide the most reliable estimates, especially where Mountain vizcachas are active at night.

Activity pattern of Cuniculus paca (Rodentia: Cuniculidae) in relation to lunar illumination and other abiotic variables in the southern Brazilian Amazon Rev. Bras. Zool.
Michalski,Fernanda; Norris,Darren.
Understanding what influences the activity of organisms is important for both ecological understanding and species conservation. Using data from 2,707 camera trap days distributed across 24 forest sites, we present quantitative analyses of the activity pattern of Cuniculus paca (Linnaeus, 1766) in southern Amazonia. We compared the activity pattern of this species across four designated subsets of the 24-hours diel cycle (dawn, dusk, day and night). Using linear regression models we tested the influence of season, temperature and rainfall on the activity patterns of C. paca (paca). We also evaluated the nocturnal photos of paca (N = 111) as a function of the degree of lunar illumination in order to test the prediction that pacas minimize their activity...

Buffer zone use by mammals in a Cerrado protected area Biota Neotropica
Paolino,Roberta Montanheiro; Versiani,Natalia Fraguas; Pasqualotto,Nielson; Rodrigues,Thiago Ferreira; Krepschi,Victor Gasperotto; Chiarello,Adriano Garcia.
Habitat loss and degradation is threatening mammals worldwide. Therefore, Protected Areas (PA) are of utmost importance to preserve biodiversity. Their effectiveness, however, depends on some management strategies such as buffer zones, which prevent/mitigate the impact of external threats and might increase the amount of available habitat for wildlife existing within reserves. Nevertheless, how intensively terrestrial mammals use buffer zones remains little studied, particularly in the Neotropical region. Aiming to analyse the use of a buffer zone (5 km wide) by medium and large-sized mammals, we modelled the occupancy probabilities of five species of conservation concern including local (interior and buffer zone) as a site covariate, simultaneously...

Structural differences in mammal assemblages between savanna ecosystems of the Colombian Llanos Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Castillo-Figueroa,Dennis; Martínez-Medina,Daniela; Rodríguez-Posada,Miguel E.; Bernal-Vergara,Sandra.
Abstract The Colombian Orinoquia region is characterized by a high diversity of mammals, which is associated with complex ecosystems that include large extensions of Neotropical savannas (known locally as “Llanos Orientales”). Despite accelerated anthropogenic transformations in savanna ecosystems, the knowledge to design effective conservation strategies, such as the distribution of mammal assemblages, is still lacking for this region. In this paper, we evaluate if assemblages of medium and large mammals (i.e., species richness, relative abundance and the contribution of the different trophic guilds) are homogeneous across the Colombian Llanos by comparing three savanna ecosystems: floodplains savannas associated with an Andean river, aeolian floodplains...
